Swim School Is "Way Cool"

Nicole was recently asked if she could teach swimming lessons to an adorable little preschooler.  I know... whaaaaaaat? We Romneys can swim, but we're not exactly known as having exceptionally spectacular swim skills.  It turns out the little guy just needs some one on one water time a few days a week, so Nicole dove right in and accepted the offer!

They have been doing the usual holding on to the side of the pool and kicking, practicing treading water, and he can even swim a short distance to get to her.

But what they really like to do is jump in

I'm hoping they'll come up soon!

Phew - they made it!

But of course her little student had a better idea. . .

You may think he was super brave and jumped in himself. . .

No, he gave Nicole his bestest little grin and got her to jump in with him on her shoulders!!!

Of course she did it, because they have a little mutual admiration thing going.  He told his dad that he has a new swim teacher named "way cool" (awesome! sounds like Nicole right:), and that she is "weally pwetty."

I know, adorable!

Nicole Goes To College. . .For Just A Few Days (whew!)

Nicole (middle) with Rachel and Tara in their dorm room
This summer has seen the Romney kids all attending camp after camp after camp.  From Cub Scout Twilight Camp to Church Girls' Camp to Football Camp and Volleyball Camp x 3, it's been hard to keep up!  Not to mention that all those sports seasons start next week.  Yikes isn't it only August?  Our last month of summer is filled up.  Ryder will start playing football for the Prosper Pirates and has 4 conditioning practices starting next week.  Harrison is back to playing football for The Prosper Eagles. Nicole has High School volleyball tryouts on Monday and Tuesday, and then begins practicing twice a day for 2-3 hours each session.  By the time school starts she will have played in about 10 matches/tournaments.

Here are some pictures from Nicole's trip to Texas A&M for a team camp with Prosper High.  Also an awesome video she produced of her and her roomies tossing fruit snacks.

Nicole's bed and desk
I thought their rooms were quite nice.  Back in the day, my dorm room was "well used."

Glad they remembered to wash up!

I'm glad they had so much fun - with fruit snacks!

Watermelon - It's Genetic :)

There's nothing like the summertime flavor of the perfectly ripened juicy watermelon, and we have been enjoying our share this summer.  My boys - especially Ryder - love to pick out the watermelon, and so far they have been doing a great job!

This passion for watermelon runs in the family.  Their Grandpa Romney grew up working in the family business "Romney Produce Company" and they had access to truckloads of watermelon.  Grandpa Romney enjoyed eating a good watermelon, and did his fair share of watermelon bombing - tossing watermelons out of the back of a pickup truck and watching them explode on the pavement!

Their Grandpa Muffett is a watermelon connoisseur.  Able to pick the very best melon out of a pile of thousands. His watermelon knocking technique is pitch perfect!!

So as you can see, this love of watermelons just comes naturally!  And my boys tell me that watermelons these days have only one downfall - no seeds to spit!!

Gone Fishin'

Harrison and Ryder have been doing some fishing this summer in The Lakes of Prosper.  It's a fun activity that keeps 'em busy.

They have actually caught some fish.  This is one that their friend Ty caught last night.

Of course it's a "catch and release" system around here, but things aren't looking good for this fella.

Look away now if you're squeamish!

Better luck next time I guess.

Did I Mention We Have A Puppy?

Harrison (with Blossom on the right) and his friend Ty got puppies around the same time!
Well, we do have a puppy, and we think she's pretty darn amazing.  Nicole and Melanie have been working with her teaching her to sit (yesterday) and roll over (today).  Blossom's a pretty good student and has learned both of her tricks so far.  In Cuba, where the Havanese breed originated, they were often trained as circus dogs.

Anyway, for a 3 month old puppy, we're pretty impressed.

She can also fetch a ball and bring it back. Although the poor pup is so small her "ball" is one of those 25 cent bouncy balls you can purchase from a gumball machine.

What should we teach her to do next?

Diving For Fun

We had a fantastic week with our Tonini cousins who came to visit.  One of our outings while they were here was to Jack Carter Pool in Plano - a real deal at $3/person.  The kids had lots of fun, avoided major sunburns, and only got scolded by the life guards a couple of times, so I consider it a good day!!

Here are some pictures of their greatest dives.

This is Corina - she wowed us with her beautiful form all day :)

I can't really say the same about Melanie!!

Although this one's a little better. . .

True to form, Nicole's always waving to the camera

The landing on this one ruptured a bunch of blood vessels in her back and left her with a lovely bruise.

Carson looks like he's gonna belly flop.

Harrison's first dive ever!

Ryder's first dive ever - I think he thought he could fly :)

Jacob performed the most flips

And there was a water slide that they had some leisurely fun on.

It was a really great day and we all had lots of fun.  Corina was undefeated in the contest for best and longest held underwater handstand.  You go girl!!!!

4 Cousins - 6 Flags Fun

Yesterday I took 4 kids to Six Flags and we had a blast - although it was super muggy and over 100 degrees outside.  Our cousin Carson was with us, because we did a "cousin swap" this week and sent Melanie to Houston to spend time with her cousin Corina, while Carson came and spent the week with us.

We were thirsty all day long - so thirsty in fact that even public drinking fountains seemed refreshing!

It was a great day to go other than the heat.  The crowds were not too bad, so the waits were very short. We rode several of our favorite rides more than once.

Here are Nicole and Ryder as we headed up the old wooden roller coaster "Judge Roy Scream" for a second time.  You can really see the fear in their eyes. . . not.

Here's Carson on the way down.

Sadly, as I age my sense of what rides are the most fun changes.  I loved this one called the "Texas Chute Out."  It has all the sense of thrill of a roller coaster.  You sit in this chair and they gently raise you to the top where you have a wonderful view, then you drift back down feeling a gentle breeze as you go - just wonderful!  The kids liked it too - Ryder was the one who asked to go on it again.

Then there was this one called the Shockwave.  As we were sitting in the ride waiting to take off, I said to Ryder, "Look at those loops that we'll be going through - it looks like binoculars."  To which he said, "No, it looks like 'shift' o, 'shift' line, 'shift' o."  The kid thinks in keyboard and he thought it looks like this. . .

O_O

He may be onto something with that one.  He's gonna be a mighty fine text messenger someday.  I guess I should be proud.

Here's Carson and Ryder on one we all enjoyed called Crazy Legs.

I made them wait to do the water rides until the end of the day, because I didn't want to walk around all day wet.  This picture was taken at the end of the ride - you can see we are dry, the boys were bummed, but I was very appreciative.  Especially when I looked at the poor mom sitting directly across from me who was completely soaked - her family got all the water that trip!  Fortunately we went on Aquaman a few minutes later and the boys got drenched (me too, sigh...)

All in all it was a mighty fine day.  And I was lucky this time because Ryder was too short to ride the really adventurous rides, so I was able to sit those out.  There was a time in my life when I would have felt really discouraged by this, but on this day going on FlashBack twice was more than enough!!

Proof Dads ARE Cool!!!

I saw this the other day, and let's just say something about it rang true :)  What do you think?

Singing In the Rain

Yesterday we had a surprise summer thunderstorm and the kids wanted to play in it.  So with a quick prayer that the lightening would stay away from our neighborhood, I let them have at it!

Nicole has always loved the rain, and she was the one to ask first if she could go out and enjoy it.

Then her siblings decided to join in.

Nothing more fun than swimming in a drainage gulley right?

They had such a great time - and I did too watching from the cover of the front porch.  It was totally worth all the wet clothes and the trail of grass bits that they left when they came in to clean up.  Lovin' these crazy Texas summers!

Embroider It!

I have been having lots of fun using my embroidery machine.  Although admittedly I have had some frustrating mistakes as I try to figure out the best ways to use it.  Above is a baby blanket that I made for my new nephew.

I made him some burp cloths too using this great tutorial I found online!!  It was super easy, and I love how they turned out.

And little Benjamin may need them, since he does a lot of this...

and this. . .
